Questions We Get From Our New Surfer Girls

Every week we have ladies pass thru our doors at Chica Brava, and every week they learn how to surf. The same questions are always asked on the first day:

  • Will I stand up by the end of the week?
  • Will I learn the science behind surfing?
  • What obstacles will I have to overcome?
  • Will I be able to surf on my own?

Starting anything new is rewarding, but can also be a downright disaster. First day of school, learning a new language, starting a new job, all have one thing in common, first day nerves and excitement. Surfing is not any different. The first day is filled with accomplishments and epic wipeouts. No one steps out on the basketball court looking like Michael Jordon, and the same goes for surfing. So, let’s answer some of those questions and clear your mind of any doubts.

Will I ride a wave by the end of the week?

Coming in as a complete beginner most people think by the end of their six days they MIGHT be riding a couple of seconds in the white wash (wave that has already broken). In our experiences here at Chica Brava, by the end of the week, almost every person is paddling to the outside and catching their own waves.12249840_10153636089948726_7711029057128159247_n

If you are coming in with previous knowledge of surfing, we begin by seeing what skill you would like to work on during the week. Learning to surf is an ongoing task, and it is a skill you can always improve upon. While you might come in knowing how to catch a wave, we can help perfect your style, flow, and skills, once on the wave.

Will I learn the science behind surfing?

IMGL9875You won’t just learn how to surf at Chica Brava but you will learn the science of how things work. We give you the ultimate experience in and out of the water. During the week our Theory Professor will teach you proper etiquette when paddling out, proper technique when riding your wave, and wave science. Here at Chica Brava learning doesn’t just take place in the water but in our classroom as well. And by classroom we mean our comfy surf house located minutes from the beach.

What obstacles will I have to overcome?

Fear and doubt always have a way of sneaking in our minds when we try something new. As in life,12279153_10153636094768726_8770614713975596138_n in surfing we face physical and mental obstacles. Whether it be you are out of shape, you are scared of the ocean, or you might be going thru something heavy in your life. All of these fears play a huge role in learning a new sport, especially surfing. But learning to surf in surf camp for women taught by women, can be very empowering. We have seen women scared to even go waist deep into the sea and end the week by paddling to the outside and catching their own waves.

Will I be able to surf on my own?

IMG_0413This question is a little harder to answer, but for the most part, yes. We want every woman to leave here feeling empowered and capable to rent/buy a surfboard and paddle out to a new break alone or with friends. We give you the skill set to know when to paddle out and when to just watch the show from the beach. Chica Brava will teach you how to read a surf report, choose the correct board, and how to paddle into the line up.

So, can you learn to surf in a week? Absolutely! Will you leave feeling empowered? Yes! Will you be the next Carissa Moore? Not in a week, but you can sure give it a try. Visit our Instagram (chicabravasurf) or our Facebook page and see what you could be doing on your next vacation!
