When and where to surf in Nicaragua?

It’s pretty safe to say that Nicaragua is consistent surf destination almost year around, but there are couple things that is good to keep in mind when planning a surf trip.

Famous for its offshore winds, Nicaragua is ideal for surfing year around, but the winds can get pretty strong in January and February. In those months, the water also gets colder and the swell is generally smaller. So if you’re looking for serious waves, it is better to avoid these months. If you are a beginner or intermediate surfer, you can still score some fun waves!

More advanced surfers might want to visit between March and November when the swell generally gets bigger. Beginners, don’t be afraid, there are always some sheltered beaches where the waves are smaller, ideal for learning. October is the the rainy season and month to avoid; it is then that you are more likely to experience onshore winds, heavy rains and stormy weather.

Where is the best surf in Nicaragua depends pretty much what you’re looking for. Do you want to get shacked or cruise with a longboard? Here at Chica Brava, we have variations of beach breaks just a short car drive away; so come and find out which one is your favorite!
