Surf Camp for Women
The Surf House is our beachfront option for the budget-minded traveler who would like to be closer to all of the action and local flavor in San Juan Del Sur, and save a bit of money while doing so! The Surf House has loads of space in the hip open-air lounge area. Relax in the hammocks, on the couches, or hang out in the beachfront store at the front of the Surf House! Our rooms are cozy and private with cold A/C and shared (women only) baths with hot water. You can also walk to all of the many shops, bars, and restaurants in town as they’re all right down the street! The surfing instruction program is the same as our regular camp at the Cloud Farm. For those who prefer the peace, quite, and pampering of a private secluded luxury retreat, we still recommend the Cloud Farm. For those who want to be right in the middle of all the action and get a feel for life in San Juan Del Sur, we recommend the Surf House for your womens surf camp.
*Please Note: The Surf House is located in the middle of San Juan Del Sur which makes it very fun but also very noisy at night – so bring earplugs, a face mask, and download a good white noisemaker app to ensure a good night’s sleep! Also, while Nicaragua has great amenities and spectacular food and experiences to enjoy, it is still a third world country and infrastructure in Nicaragua is not the same as where you may be coming from. Electricity and water are valuable and scarce resources and, as in many developing countries, we sometimes have water and power outages or “brown outs” that can run from a few hours to a full day. Our camp is equipped with a water tank and loads of candles and matches in case we experience one of these infrequent outages while you are here. We just want you to keep this in mind when choosing to travel to Nicaragua.

Surfing Experience Levels
We have the resources and expertise to accommodate all experience levels during the same camp week. See the following list below to help you determine your skill level:
Beginner – has yet to successfully paddle out alone and catch/ride a wave clearly to its logical finish. This includes someone with ZERO experience as well as someone who is able to stand up and surf in the white water, while being pushed in or paddling into the whitewash yourself.
Advanced Beginner – is able to paddle to the outside in small conditions by using the adequate techniques (turtle rolling and/or pushing yourself up/over/through breaking waves), catch waves and ride them straight to the beach or at an angle.
Intermediate – surfer can successfully paddle out alone at a familiar location and catch and ride waves to a logical finish frontside or backside, trim along the wave face at an angle, and either confidently use or attempt to use the three basic surfing turns – bottom turn, top turn and cutback. An intermediate surfer is able to read the waves and determine whether to ride them right or left.
Advanced Intermediate – is able to paddle out in up to 4-6 ft. conditions on an unknown break and catch and ride waves, being able to perform all of the above.
Advanced – can paddle out alone to a surf spot she has never ridden, assess the lineup, and catch and ride waves to her choice of finish, confidently using a full range of turns and maneuvers. The advanced surfer has full knowledge about surf etiquette, types of breaks, conditions, and what board is best to ride in which conditions.

Interested in volunteering and giving back to the local community while here? CHICABRAVA gives back in a variety of ways and can arrange volunteer opportunities for you while in San Juan del Sur. Please check out the options below and inquire with us for more information!
CHICABRAVA Camp Bella: Each year, we host a charitable surf camp empowerment program for underprivileged young women in Nicaragua. In previous years, we focused exclusively on aiding in the rehabilitation of victims of human trafficking. In 2015, we expanded our outreach program to include a broader mission of combatting cultural gender inequality in Nicaragua and overcoming the negative effects of generations of gender oppression, particularly in the domestic setting. This year, we are focusing on our local community and excitedly welcome you to get involved as we change the lives of 13 young women from San Juan del Sur. Click here for more info or write to us at Contact Us to find out how you can get involved.
Escuela Adelante: The name ‘Adelante’ suggests forward moving momentum, and that’s exactly what this program is all about. Based at the Biblioteca Movil, Escuela Adelante is an 40 student bilingual after school English Prep program, that prepares students for a higher level of education and schooling. The pedagogy is based on language support and exchange between the foreign and local culture, uniting the two and creating a positive learning environment for all. Click here for more information or write to us at firstname.lastname@example.org to find out how you can volunteer at the school.
Chicas Adelante: A community outreach program for young women in the community formed as a collaboration between CHICABRAVA and Escuela Adelante. The respective teams from Escuela Adelante and CHICABRAVA convene for monthly meetings with a select group of young women who have shown hard work and dedication, and a true desire to succeed given their circumstances. Click here for more info!
CHICABRAVA Bi-Monthly Beach Cleanup: Occurring on the first Sunday of every other month, CHICABRAVA invites all schools and friends in the local area to join the beach cleanup sponsored by CHICABRAVA. Anyone who attends the beach cleanup will receive a CHICABRAVA ‘beach cleanup’ tank top and all supplies needed to participate in the beach cleanup such as rubber gloves, trash bags and F-U-N! This is a way to not only cleanup our local San Juan del Sur Bay, but it is a new initiative to bring our entire community, expat or local, together as one for the same common purpose. Click here for more info or let us know if you’re interested!
San Juan del Sur Biblioteca – The San Juan del Sur Biblioteca is a free public library started in 2001 that has over 12,500 books in Spanish and English. The Biblioteca offers two different programs that help the children and community of San Juan del Sur which you can participate in while here. The Children’s Program is a free afternoon class for children that includes theater, story hour, science projects, crafts, study area and English classes. The Biblioteca Movíl is a mobile library project which goes three days a week into the rural areas to schools to deliver books, read stories to the children, assist in arts and crafts, play games and help with the process of lending out library books. This is a great experience to see the rural part of Nicaragua and bring exciting new activities to children. For additional information, please visit their website at www.sjdsbiblioteca.org. If you would like to participate in either of these initiatives while here let us know and we will set it up!
Donations are always welcome in Nicaragua. You might find yourself short on “free-from-surfing-time” while here, so another great way to help out is by bringing down any of the following items:
- School supplies
- Art supplies
- Bilingual dictionaries
- Baby formula
- Adult diapers
- Soccer equipment
- Basketball equipment
- Volleyball equipment
- Baseball equipment
- Softball equipment
- Bachelorette parties
- Mother-daughter weeks
- Co-ed group camps
- Couples escapes
- Family camps
