Let’s face it: Staying in shape in your 50’s isn’t quite like staying in shape in your 30’s, or even your 40’s. The most important thing is to keep in touch with your body: do things that work for you, without overworking joints that might be painful these days.

Here are some ideas for lower-impact workouts that’ll keep you in shape in any decade.

Swimming

Swimming is a nice and smooth, low-impact activity. Repeating a motion that is similar to paddling while surfing will keep your muscles in shape and get you ready for an eventual surf trip! And what about that feeling of being submerged by water, so blissful! Swimming is really easy on your joints, too, since you’re floating.

Cross-Country Skiing

Do you live up north or near mountains where the snow covers the land for a good part of the year? Cross-country skiing could be a great sport for you! With your poles, you’ll push one arm at a time and build up strength in your shoulder muscles. Sliding on the snow might even remind you of the feeling of sliding on a wave!

Rollerblading

Rollerblading is a nice cardiovascular activity, so it’ll keep your heart healthy. Also, it gives a similar feeling as running. If you have any joint pain, it is a very good activity since there’s practically no impact. Go on a path or even cruise around the town!

Yoga

Yoga will give you strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Yoga frees your mind and allows your body to realign. It is a very good to practice just in itself, as an activity to recover from an intense sport, or also to build a solid base for any other physical activities.

Hiking

Hiking is a beautiful activity to do. You can hike plenty in the summer and fall time, but also in the winter with snowshoes in provincial or national parks around your location. Walking around admiring the beauty of your environment will provide you good shape but also peace of mind and breathtaking views. Bring on the feeling of being taller than the mountain!

Surfing

Of course, I was going to mention surfing. Surfing will keep you young forever no matter what’s your actual age. Come to a 50+ retreat and let the wave take you on this beautiful adventure and way of living.
