Everyone dreams of that perfect escape where you can find a vibrant surf scene, epic sunsets every day, a beautiful local culture, many unique restaurants, and waves that will make you froth for days. It seems like an unachievable dream, but you can encounter all of the above here in San Juan Del Sur! That’s why it’s our homebase. We find our stoke through surfing 5-6 different beaches around, through meeting adventurous travellers and sharing stories with authentic locals.
Even if San Juan Del Sur is pure bomb and we could spend our whole life in this place, here are some destinations you could visit after coming to our surf retreat at Chica Brava.
Isla de Ometepe
You will find Ometepe Island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. The «island» constitutes two volcanos, one active and one instinct, that are attached together by a piece of land. You can go for a hike, visit some permaculture farms, walk all the way to a majestic waterfall or even enjoy the comfort of natural sources.
If you are willing to see lava, Masaya Volcano is definitely the place you want to go to. It was actually named as the first National Park of Nicaragua back in 1979. The park has 2 volcanoes and 5 craters and you can see the lava emerging of the area day and night!
Granada : a Colorful Colonial City
If you start adventuring around Granada, make sure you have your camera ready. This colonial city is full of history and will make you want to capture every moment. It could be the view on top of Iglesia la Merced, the colorful walls and doors, or even the beautiful people and the lively city itself. Adventure around and find what makes you vibe!
Laguna de Apoyo
The Laguna de Apoyo is a true little wonder that you can find between Masaya and Granada. It was created due to the explosion of a volcano thousands of years ago. If you want to go to a relaxing place, enjoy 35 km2 of clear water, swim or even kayak on the lake, Laguna de Apoyo is the place you want to go.
La Catedral de Leon
If you happen to be in Leon, the Cathedral is totally worth a stop. The façade is beautiful but it’s not where it holds its charm. You need to go all the way up! It’s just a few steps to the roof, but you’ll feel all the way to the clouds. At the entrance, we take off our shoes, and suddenly we feel like walking into heaven. It’s a quick visit but this Cathedral you’ll remember for a lifetime.
Little Corn Island
Last, but not the least, the little corn island is one the best hidden secrets of Nicaragua. To reach this piece of paradise, you’ll need to fly on the other side of the country. Yes, this island is located in the Caribbean sea. If you are passionate about diving and snorkeling, you will definitely like this spot. It might seem of a mission to get there but, it’s worth the journey. You will experience a different environment and also a different side of the Nicaraguan culture.
