Wow, we can’t believe we are already on our third meeting of Chicas Adelante! Working with the amazing ladies of Escuela Adelante has been such a pleasure, and we are so excited to continue this initiative! Every month we grow closer and closer to these talented young ladies, and this month was no exception. We decided it was time to get in the water! All the girls got their first lesson how to swim! We had a quick stop at the library and than headed up to the Pelican Eyes pool.

The day started at the San Juan del Sur Biblioteca where we sat with the girls and asked them a few questions. This week we focused on different traits you have to be a good friend, and different qualities you would like to see in a friend. The questions really got the girls thinking… What do they look for in a friend? Every girl had different answers but the main one that was repeated again and again was a friend who was a good listener. All of the qualities the chicas mentioned directly correlated with the values we have here at Chica Brava. Check out our mission statement and values page!

As we left the library, the girls could barely contain themselves and were beyond excited to get in the water. We hiked up the stairs to the top pool at Pelican Eyes, 300 stairs later we arrived at our final destination, paradise! The girls, of course, immediately wanted to get in the water, but we started with a quick lesson out of the water first.

We first begun with having all the chicas slowly enter the water while holding onto to the side of the pool. Some ladies were natural fish, while others were a bit more timid. We practiced kicking, paddling, and blowing bubbles! At the end of the hour almost everyone was comfortable in the water. For a couple of the girls this was the first time they had been in a pool!

After our lesson, we had a few minutes for a snack before we made our journey back down the stairs to the library. Seeing the happiness on all the girl’s faces is the best part of the day. I look forward to seeing theses amazing and talented ladies every month. The best part is I usually don’t have to wait a full month, because I see them around town almost everyday!

And a special thank you to Pelican Eyes for donating your pool for swim lessons!
