Checking in with our second edition of Chicas Adelante! This week we switched things up a bit and did half our meeting at the library and the other half at Chica Brava! The girls had such a blast this week, and are so excited to continue this program!

We all met at the library again, and reviewed our poems from last month. In our handmade journals we wrote an acrostic poem with the word CHICA. The girls came up with some awesome english/spanish phrases and words for their poems. Albeit, a little shy they all read them aloud.

After listening to all of the awesome poems, we asked the girls a simple question, ‘What things can you do to help prepare you for your future’? Some of the girls answered with to study, listen more, and to stay organized. Others responded with to be nice and to work as a team. All their answers were awesome and it was just another way for us to get to know these amazing young women.

We than took a little walk over to the one and only, Chica Brava. From the moment we walked we had the girls full attention. They checked out the rooms and even had a little ‘nap’ on the beds! After their ‘nap’ we ate a little snack and headed over to the chalkboard for a little lesson on Chica Brava and board parts.

Anna started the lesson out with explaining how Chica Brava works and who is in what position.  The girls learned we have a infrastructure, that allows us to stay organized and to keep Chica Brava running smoothly. We also went over the Chica Brava Values! Here are the 14 Values of Chica Brava:

1. Honesty
2. Kindness
3. Humility
4. Respect
5. Encouragement
6. Passion
7. Compassion
8. Strength
9. Bravery
10. Positivity
11. Lightheartedness
12. Thoughtfulness
13.Teamwork
14.Support.

Next we showed the girls parts of the surfboard and explained what each part is in spanish and english. These chicas are stoked to learn about surfing and to have the opportunity to further their education outside of school! After, the girls also enjoyed a quick pop-up lesson! Everyone  demonstrated a pop-up even Jaime and Carolyn their teachers! We really had fun this week, inside the ‘classroom’, but we enjoyed an amazing time outside as well right at the bay.

To really get our senses working we went to the beach and wrote about how each part of the beach affected our five senses. Splitting into three groups of three or four we girls and two adults, we wrote a couple of sentences about each sense. Here is an example of one of the pages.

Smell- Olemos el mar salado y el aire fresco. (We smell the salty sea and the fresh air.)
Touch- La brisa en la cara y la arena en los pies. Tambien el agua fria. (We feel the breeze on the face and the sand on the toes.)
Hear- Oimos cuando revienten las olas y el viento. (We hear when the waves break and the wind blows.)
See- Vemos gente surfeando, y en la direcion que queremos ir. Vemos cuando entran las olas. ( We see the people surfing and the direction they want to go. We see when they enter the waves.)
Taste– Sentimos el agua salada cuando tragamos ague. (We taste the salty water when we swallow the water.)
Mind- Sensaciones de felicidad, alegria, y amor. (We feel happy, joy, and love.)

Finding activities to do with these chicas is easy and they always have fun no matter what we are doing! Until next month, thanks for checking in!
