We all have our own reasons to surf. Some surf to have fun, to push themselves physically, to let go of a bad day, or to be in the moment.

Recently, the NAVY has had studies being done to understand whether surfing has value for men and women suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and sleep problems. The study has service members answer questionnaires before and after the 6-week study of surfing.

The results conclude that surfing did lead to a decrease in insomnia, anxiety, and overall negative view of life. Researchers believe that exercise, but more importantly, exercise in a natural environment is the best medicine for post traumatic stress disorder. Men and women who are more reluctant to open up to traditional support groups find it easier to talk to fellow surfers. They start talking about surfing then open up to more personal issues and traumas.

One man stated, “ Surfing is the only way to take the edge off my anger. We help heal each other one wave at a time.”
